What is Irodori Comics?
Irodori Comics localizes and publishes Japanese doujinshi for fans around the world to enjoy. Doujinshi are self-published "indie" works, and as such, we work directly with artists in order to produce localizations that are true to their original vision. This means giving works an authentic translation that keeps the nuance, and inserting hand-drawn sound effects that feel organic to the original artwork. By doing so, we hope to expand Japanese doujinshi artists' reach by providing all of their fans an opportunity to support them directly whilst promoting the collaborative spirit of doujinshi culture across the world!

Doujinshi are self-published books. Although commonly mistaken for parody or adult-oriented (hentai) works, doujinshi are actually more than just that. The truth is, doujinshi are both a creative outlet and a significant means of financial income for manga artists. Unlike serialized works that are licensed under a commercial publisher, doujinshi are produced and funded by the artists themselves. Because of the nature of these works, it's not easy for artists to pursue distribution outside of Japan by themselves.
As a small doujinshi publisher, Irodori Comics is able to collaborate directly with artists in order to minimize localization costs whilst prioritizing the royalty they receive for each work sold. In doing so, we hope to reassure fans that each purchase goes a long way in supporting the artists they love directly.
Doujinshi are self-published works by manga artists. Unlike serialized works that are licensed by a major publisher, doujinshi are produced in smaller numbers because tasks that would have been handled by a large publishing company are often handled by just the manga artist themselves. As a result, all costs for publishing fall to the artist, who often only recoups the costs if the doujinshi sells well at conventions. Despite the risks involved, Doujinshi still make up a significant proportion of a manga artist's income. In fact, many continue to do it not only for the money, but for the joy of experimenting with ideas they otherwise would not have tried in commercial works since they aren't working under the supervision of a publishing company's editor. It is, in every sense of the word, a passion project.
And because of the significant amount of work involved, coupled with the inherent risks of publishing on one's own, Doujinshi tend to be much shorter and sell for a significantly higher price compared to commercial manga, often ranging from about $5 to $10 for a 30-page work. But despite this, Doujinshi tend to be more unique, innovative, and personal. Doujinshi also serve as a means for artists to connect with their fans, as seen in the afterword messages that are included with each release. It is for this reason that, despite the price, Doujinshi are cherished by manga fans in Japan and are considered one of the best ways to support a manga artist.
We strive to bring out Doujinshi for Everybody. In line with that vision, we've established different labels under the Irodori Comics brand to publish and deliver the doujinshi that you, the fans, want to read. In order to actualize that vision, we have created Irodori Lite -- an all ages version of our website -- that specifically showcases our works in the Irodori Aqua and Irodori Sakura imprint. These are unique works that hardly ever see officially published releases outside of Japan, and we are thrilled to be able to share them with you to enjoy.

1) Bigger royalties for artists
In keeping with our motto to make Doujinshi for Everybody, we currently distribute through various partner channels. We believe in allowing fans to access doujinshi in the way that they prefer, but third party distribution costs limit the amount of royalties artists can receive.
While third party distributors are well established with a wide reach, some charge more than two thirds of the sales price as part of distribution costs, which severely limits the amount of royalties we can provide to authors.
Purchasing through the Irodori Lite Store, however, means artists will be able to receive bigger royalties for each doujinshi you buy, as we won’t have to pay such distribution fees. Making sure artists earn from their works is very important to us, and we know it's very important to you, the fans, as well.
In this way, we hope to gain your confidence in supporting artists through the Irodori Lite store and appreciate not just the quality of the work that we do, but also the value behind the Irodori label itself.
2) If you buy it, you own it
All our digital doujinshi works are DRM-Free and can be downloaded for you to keep. Our products are available in high quality PDF format of 3200px or 2400px height.
3) A safe for work website with more ways to enjoy!
Our main Irodori Comics website (under construction) handles some adult-oriented products, which might make it awkward for those who are only interested in purchasing all ages works. Irodori Comics Lite is a website where you can browse to your heart's content without coming across any NSFW content.
Precisely because the Irodori Lite website handles only all ages works, there are more payment options available to make purchasing more convenient.
